Core Aeration: Core aeration is the mechanical removal of cores from the soil with hollow tines. As the soil re-fills the core holes, soil compaction is relieved. This creates voids in the soil which allow air and moisture to penetrate the soil. Fertilizer and other treatments more easily penetrate the soil surface, root development is enhanced, and excessive thatch may be prevented. The cores removed will be ½ inch in diameter and 2 to 3 inches in length. They will be removed 5 to 7 inches apart throughout the area. Removal of the cores is not recommended, as they break down and will be re-incorporated into the lawn.

Aeration and Over-seeding: Core aeration is doubled to better open up the soil. Seed starts in the holes first and gradually fill in the lawn. This method is preferred over slice seeding for filling in thin or patchy lawns with compacted soil.

Spring and fall clean-up

Spring. Old leaves, excessive dead foliage, and road gravel plowed onto the lawn in the winter should be removed as soon as the ground thaws enough, to encourage strong re-growth. This sort of raking should generally be done before the application of pre-emergent weed controls since the debris might block penetration to the soil and heavy raking may destroy the “soil barrier” such products create. Damage from snow mold (a common disease which appears as snow and ice melt off on lawn areas) may be lessened with timely action also.

Fall. Keeping falling leaves from smothering the lawn is very important. Leaves which sit too long choke the grass and may kill it outright! Mowing often with a bagging lawn mower can help. Never mulch leaves into the lawn as the resulting mat takes too long to break down, will smother grass plants, and encourages diseases also.
